Revolt of 1857

The students will be able to recall the revolt of 1857, the sequence of events and the reasons for revolt.

Policies and People

The polices of the East India Company affected different people like kings, queens, land lords, peasants, tribals and soldiers in different ways.

Students will listen carefully and note down.

The students will able to engage in discussions regarding the revolt and their nation’s struggle for independence.

 

Reasons of revolt.

 

 

To understand the Reasons of revolt.

 

 

Reasons for the revolt:-

The nawabs were loosing their power.

i) Since the mid 18th century, Nawabs and Rajas had seen their power erode. They lost their authority and honour.

ii) In 1801, a subsidiary alliance was imposed on Awadh. The company began to plan to bring an end to the Mughal Dynasty.

The reasons are given bellow

a) Political administrative Reason:-

i)The British policy of territorial annexations led to the displacement of long number of rulers and chiefs.

ii) The vigorous application of the doctrine of lapse and polices of subsidiary alliance angered the ruling sections of society.

iii) The annexation of Awadh was widely seen as a back stabbing act by the British.

iv) Peasants had to pay higher revenue and additional taxes.

b) Social and Religious causes:-

i) Abolition of ‘states’, legalisation of widow remarriage and extension of western education to women were perceived as interference in social customs of the country.

ii) Social discrimination against Indians turned them against the British.

iii) Fear that British government was determined to destroy their religion and convert Indian’s to Christianity.

iv) The policy of lands that belonged to temples and mosques lent further support to this idea.

c) Military:-

i) Indian officers were treated with discrimination by the British officers within the camps.

ii) They were paid much less than British soldiers.

iii)Higher posts were reserved for the British.

iv) Act of 1816 Which required new recruits to travel overseas if needed. Hindu sepoys represented this as according to the popular belief to travel across sea led to a loss of caste.

v) The spark that ignited the fire was the greased cartridges of the Enfield rifle that had to be bitten off before loading. The news spread the grease was made of cow and pig fat both scared to Hindus and Muslims respectively.

d) Economic and administrative:-

i) The most important cause was the British policy of economically exploiting India.

ii) Peasants referred due to high revenue demands. Artisans were ruined with influx of cheap British goods in the market which made their products uneconomical to produce.

iii) Withdrawal of royal patronage due to displacement of ruling classes.

 

Reasons for failure.

To discuss with students about the failure of the revolt.

The revolt failed because.

i) There was no proper planning, co-ordination and unity overall.

ii) Lack of resources with Indian soldiers.

iii) British adopted the successful policy of Divide and Rule.

iv) Revolt was unable to spread all over the country.

v) There was a lack of common idea.

Result of revolt.

To enable students about the outcome of the revolt.

The revolt had failed to do what it set out for but it did shape the roots of the British Empire.

i) The Act of the 1858 was passed to ensure a more responsible management of Indian affairs, the powers of East India company was transferred to the British Crown.

ii) All ruling chiefs were allowed to peep their territories.

iii) Indian soldiers proportion would be decreased and the no. of European soldiers increased.

iv) British decided to respect the customary religious and social practices.

v) Policies were made to protect landlords and zamindars.
